Reinder Homan etcher by nature

One of the most famous etchers in the Netherlands, Reinder Homan, exhibits in the Koetshuis at the Fraeylemaborg. Ten works come from the collection of Jan Menze van Diepen.
Reinder Homan (Smilde, 1950) was captivated by this versatile and complicated technique during his studies at the Groningen Academy Minerva.

Elegant brushstrokes with an instant appeal to the imagination: Chinese characters have something truly magical about them. Not only because of their intrinsic beauty –to Western eyes at least – but also because of their wonderful symbolism and the often extraordinary stories they can tell.
From 25 March, the Kunstmuseum of The Hague shows a special selection of Chinese objects out of the Van Diepen collection among chinese porcelain from other collections.

Selection from the Collection Topographic Maps and Prints
This publication, the third in the series “Selections from the collection of Jan Menze van Diepen Foundation” is dedicated to the topographic maps and prints.
Collector Van Diepen, acquired 586 maps and prints, mainly of the province and the city of Groningen as their subject.
In addition, he collected fortress maps, charts and maps of the Wadden Sea, and of the Seven (or Seventeen) provinces. Also fascinating are the prints of historic sites in Groningen.
Over one hundred interesting and sometimes rare specimens in this catalog are shown and described.
The selection was made by Drs. Henny van Harten-Boers, curator of Jan Menze van Diepen collection and also of the Estate Fraeylemaborg.

A VIEW ON GRONINGEN
A VIEW ON GRONINGEN.
For centuries the province Groningen is planned out in detail. Sometimes as a province alone, quite often as part of a larger area with among others Friesland, Drenthe and Ost-Friesland.
Especially from the prime time of the Dutch cartography, the 17th century nice maps of Groningen are present. In the 18th century there was still a remarkable large production of maps, but the quality was sometimes lower. But also from this period interesting province maps are saved.
These maps are interesting because of their topographic data, but also because of their attractive decorations and ornaments. Sometimes they are real works of art that already in their period of creation were bought by collectors. The colouring of the printed maps was a special trade: a “afzetter” (map-colourer) who understood his business, could make a map substantial more valuable.
In this exhibition 30 decorative maps of the province Groningen can be seen. Also some old street maps of the city Groningen are added.
All maps were collected by Jan Menze van Diepen (1905-1994), who brought together an unique collection from this area.

3 vitrines with a surface of about 120 x 80 cm.
In consultation the size of the exhibition can be adapted to the available space.
Requirements climate and safety:
The loans may be exhibited solely in a space that meets minimal rules of air conditioning and safety. Also the lighting must be well-considered.
Transport
The costs of transport are for the loan-taker.
The works of art will be presented framed and wrapped in air-cushion foil.
Insurance
The loan taker takes care of an all-risks insurance for transport and stay of the works of art.
A list of insurance values will be provided by the Jan Menze van Diepen Stichting.
Texts
Together with the works of art text-cards with explanation are given.
Two general text boards as an introduction on the theme of the exhibition are delivered in a frame.

ORANJE-SIGNS OF REMEMBRANCE
In our daily life we regularly come in touch with our royal house: the face of our king Willem-Alexander van Oranje-Nassau goes daily from hand to hand on our coins.
Festivities related to the royal family as birthdays, marriages and successions are in the focus of attention and are celebrated until today.
The exhibition ORANGE-SIGNS OF REMEMBRANCE consists of about fifty objects and thirty prints. They show how the last two hundred years the royal family was brought to the attention of the Dutch people and how the Dutch subjects brought tribute to Oranje-Nassau.
Especially the many Oranje-associations, companies and institutions in The Netherlands started the initiative for this. They let produce special commemoration mugs, -plates and -coins. But also the national and local authorities showed themselves very active.
All objects and prints come out of the elaborate Oranje-Nassaucollection brought together by Jan Menze van Diepen (1905-1994).

RIEKELE PRINS (1905-1954), engraver of the landscape of Groningen
Riekele Prince (born 1905) grew up in Bedum, where he was an amateur painter who became experienced in various drawing and painting techniques.
In 1933 he got the possibility to follow a drawing course in Groningen. Gradually he became more succesful, especially in his speciality: paof the panoramic landscape of Groningen.
He excelled in the technique of the “dry needle”, where the print shows a velvet effect. Also in the regular etch he achieved remarkable results, by letting eat away the etching plate in a masterly way. By that he achieved a very special spatial effect in his landscapes.
Sometimes Prins drew directly on the metal plate, but mostly a sketch was made in preparation. With a rather simple printing press the artist printed with great care his etches, often in very small editions.
The landscape of Groningen was his greatest source of inspiration. As nobody else he knew how to reflect the peace and stillness of the often empty northern landscape, sometimes with a well-known little church at the horizon: for example Leegkerk, Fransum, and Oostum. Riekele Prins died in 1954, in the age of only 49 years.
In this exhibition are gathered 30 etches and drawings, and besides that also some etching plates.
They are collected by Jan Menze van Diepen (1905-1994) who was an admirer of the work of Riekele Prins.

Chinese Porcelain in Green Enamels

The exhibition Famille Verte is about a very special kind of Chinese porcelain. Simply put, famille verte (c.1680-1725) wares are extraordinarily fine and beautiful objects. The colourful decorations of flowers, butterflies, mythical animals or Chinese figural scenes are rendered in painstaking detail. In the West, this porcelain with its strange and exotic subjects ranked among the best available and was coveted by the wealthy. The more than 120 objects in the exhibition have a big variety in shape an decoration.
Princessehof Leeuwarden national museum of ceramics
Entirely renewed permanent Chinese exhibition.
The Van Diepen collection contains among others a large collection Eastern ceramics. According to Prof. Dr. Christiaan Jörg it is even the largest private collection in this field in The Netherlands. A large part of these Eastern ceramics come from China.
The most important museum of ceramics in the Netherlands, the Princessehof in Leeuwarden, has entirely renewed his permanent Chinese exhibition lately. They have the largest museum collection in this field. After a renovation of about two years, they have drawn a fascinating chronological line through the age-long history of China.
In this arrangement “Topstukken Chinese Keramiek” the museum also included 13 pieces from the collection Van Diepen.
An example is the 16th century pouring-jug in the form of a dancing woman. Of this very rare type comparable specimens are only present in Londen and Tokyo.
Very special are also two plates ornamented with peach- and pomegranate branches in email-colours. These plates (looking peculiar modern) were made in the early 18th century for the Imperial court and are from extraordinary quality.
Also such a special form has the cream-white quadrangle teapot (blanc de chine) from about 1700. “that square form is difficult to make and the result is very clever done” says profs. Jörg about this piece.
The Chinese master pieces in the Princessehof stay there for a longer period. Have a look and search the 13 Van Diepen-pieces!
Burglary at Fraeylemaborg
In the night from Saturday to Sunday, June 2, 2013 there has been a burglary occurred in museum Fraeylemaborg in Slochteren in the province Groningen.
Two very special Chinese porcelain dragon plates, dated around 1465 and around 1700, as well as many special Dutch silver objects were stolen.
The burglars have forced the door with great force. The burglary resistant laminated glass of the china cabinet was partially broken with heavy tools. The two specific objects, of the dozens of beautiful porcelain pieces, are gone.
The Police and Museum Fraeylemaborg decided as much information about the objects to be spread so that everyone can watch on whether he or she signals the valuables.

Besides the usual loans of one or more objects, the Jan Menze van Diepen Stichting has specially prepared for this purpose a number of exhibitions which can be acquired in loan as a whole.
Loan conditions
One of the aims of the Jan Menze van Diepen Foundation is to show the collection to interested parties.
That’s why the Foundation is eager to coōperate in giving loans to museums and cultural institutions.
Condition hereby is that the objects are exhibited in a appropriate way. Safety and en good climate conditions must be safeguarded.
All works of art on paper are lend framed.
Costs of transport and insurance are at the expense of the loan-taker.
